Monticello, Indiana Attractions

Monticello stands at the center of White and Carroll counties, a summertime recreation area. We are situated on the Tippecanoe River between two man-made lakes, (Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman) and that is where we get our name: Twin Lakes Southern Baptist Church.

Interstate 65 is approximately 20 miles to the west of the city, reached by US 24. This highway intersects with north-south US 421 and State Road 39 in Monticello. It is ideally located between major airports (Chicago's Midway and O'Hare International and Indianapolis International Airport). White County has its own general aviation airport.

Activities In Monticello:

Indiana Beach Amusement & Camp Resort is located on Lake Shafer, four miles north of the church property. Attractions include sand beach swimming, giant water park, 5 coasters, amusement rides, entertainment, cottages, restaurants, two campgrounds, motels, inns, Shafer Queen paddle boat, IB Jellystone Park Camp Resort. Fishing and Boating: Fishing is available on Lake Shafer, Lake Freeman and Tippecanoe River and nearby Wabash River. Ski Boats, Jet skis, wave runners, pontoons, canoes can be rented at many marinas.

Golf Courses:

  • Pine Island "Lighted Golf" Par 3 located at 1969 NW Shafer Drive (about 2 miles from church property). 9-hole golf course you can play at night for $6 for 9 holes.
  • Pine View Golf Course is located next door. It is a long 18-hole tree lined golf course.
  • Tippecanoe Country Club Golf Course is located two miles north, with the greens and fairways running along Lake Shafer.
  • Hollow Acres Golf Center is located at 8291 US 421 and is a 9-hole par 3 golf course. (about 7 miles from the church property)

Other activities close by:

  • Madam Carroll is a paddleboat that cruises Lake Freeman each night in the summertime. Ticket prices are $12 per person. The boat is docked at the bridge on US 421 as you are leaving the city of Monticello.


  • White County Museum is located at 101 S Bluff St. Open on Wednesdays from 9 to 3, it is located in one of White County's most historic buildings, a public library established by Andrew Carnegie in 1907. Includes Native American artifacts, a Hoosier kitchen, government records and artifacts, family Bibles and etc.


  • Two theatres: Downtown Theatre and Lake Shore Drive In Theatre on N. Main and Rickey Road.


  • Canal Park in Delphi is located 10 miles south of Monticello. Relive the life styles of the people that lived along the canal in the 1800s at the Wabash & Erie Canal Interpretive Center at Canal Park. Then enjoy a walking trail along the canal. While you are there check out the Carroll County Court House. The courthouse is central to Delphi's downtown square and outlying areas chock full of unique shops and restaurants. Start with the Carroll County Historical Museum and the National Resister listed courthouse itself. The focal point of the three-story courthouse is its circular rotunda and stained glass ceiling panels high above the intricately designed floor.


  • Just 15 minutes from Monticello on US 24 stands the Civil-war era Wolcott House recently added to the National Resister of Historic Places. Appointments are necessary on Wednesdays.


  • The town of Monon is located 15 miles north on US 421. The Monon Connection and Whistle Stop Restaurant located 1-½ miles north of Monon offers a world-class collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the railroad's bygone era. Museum exhibits include an exquisite display of dining car china and silver, hundreds of hand-held lanterns, some dating back to pre Civil War, locomotive bells and whistles, a completely furnished, full size replica to an Illinois Central depot and many other pieces to relive a time when the railroad was king of the transportation industry. The restaurant offers a full service menu that includes a variety of sandwiches and dinner entrée's. The museum charges an admission of $6 for adults and $3 for children.   • Visit Fair Oakes Farms located just off of I-65. Take a 45-minute bus tour of one of the largest dairy farms in the US. It offers exhibits that explain how the dairy industry protects the environment, cares for the dairy cows, and ensures the highest quality milk possible. You see the milking process, the birthing of a calf, and the dairy processing plant where cheese and ice cream is made. www.fofarms.com


  • Saddle up at Crooked Creek Trails if you are a horse lover. Chaperoned horseback rides for riders of all experience levels are offered. You can go and ride for 30 minutes for $15 or a full hour ride for $20. Located at Lake Cicott. www.crookedcreektrails.com

Historical Attractions include Fort Ouiatenon, Historic Neighborhoods, Historic Prophetstown, which is dedicated to the preservation of agricultural and environmental heritage. Located within Prophetstown State Park, Tippecanoe Battlefield, Tippecanoe County Courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.
